Black Forest Cake is my daughter's favorite cake, she usually requests it for her birthday. In Germany, Black Forest Cake is made with dark cherries that are marinated in Kirsch, and is much less sweet. This cake is an Americanized version, but delicious nonetheless.

1/2 stick butter
1 c. sliced almonds
1 pt. whipping cream
1 t. cream or tarter

Bake cake according to package directions in either 3 9" layer cake pans or in a 9"X13" baking pan. Cool cake completely. Meanwhile chop chocolate in small pieces and put in bowl with butter. Microwave for 2 minutes at 50% power. Stir. If needed, continue to microwave in 30 second increments at 50% power until chocolate is melted and smooth. If making layer cake, spread chocolate between layers; if making sheet cake, spread chocolate on top. Cool until chocolate is firm (put in fridge if desired). Spread cherry pie filling on top. Start beating cream on low speed, increasing speed as cream thickens. When beginning to thicken add sugar and cream of tarter. Beat until very stiff. Spread whipped cream on sides and bordering cherries on layer cake; spread cream in center. leaving a border of cherries on edges of sheet cake. Put in fridge until ready to serve.
