Why I Love This Recipe
The concept of charcuterie originally referred to artfully arranging meats, but the modern resurgence has expanded to delightful assortments of sweets and fruits, making charcuterie boards versatile for any occasion.
Ingredients You'll Need
3 large Granny Smith apples, thinly sliced
3 large Honeycrisp apples, thinly sliced
1 lemon, juiced
1 cup caramel sauce (divided, see separate caramel sauce recipe)
1 cup white chocolate chips, melted and divided
1 cup dark chocolate chips, melted and divided
1/2 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or almonds)
1/2 cup mini marshmallows
1/2 cup crushed graham crackers
1/2 cup toffee bits
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/4 cup sea salt flakes
Edible flowers for garnish
Directions
***For the caramel sauce:*** In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of water over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves, then stop stirring and allow the mixture to bring to a boil. Cook until it turns a golden amber color, about 10-12 minutes. Remove from heat and slowly whisk in 1/2 cup of heavy cream. Stir in 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter and a pinch of sea salt. Let cool before using.
Arrange the thinly sliced apples on a large serving board or platter. Sprinkle the lemon juice over the apples to prevent browning and add a touch of tartness.
Drizzle 1/2 cup of the cooled caramel sauce over the apples.
Warm the remaining caramel sauce for later use in a small bowl.
Create sections around the apples by drizzling 1/2 of the melted white chocolate and 1/2 of the melted dark chocolate in separate areas of the board.
Sprinkle chopped nuts over the dark chocolate and mini marshmallows over the white chocolate for contrasting textures.
Fill in the remaining areas with crushed graham crackers, toffee bits, and dried cranberries for added sweetness and crunch.
Add edible flowers in different spots to give your board a whimsical touch and make it visually stunning.
Just before serving, drizzle the remaining melted white chocolate, dark chocolate, and warmed caramel over the array to enhance the decadence.
Finish with a sprinkle of sea salt flakes to balance the sweetness.
TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR APPLES FROM BROWNING: When you slice your apples, just sprinkle a little lemon juice over them. Another option is to dilute the lemon juice with some water and let the apple slices soak for a minute or two. This way, they’ll stay nice and crisp without too much lemony flavor.
Pairs Well With
For an adult beverage, pair with a spiced apple cider sangria. For a non-alcoholic option, try an iced cinnamon apple green tea to complement the flavors.
