Chocolate Surprise Cake

Why I Love This Recipe
When I was a kid, my Auntie Florence in New Bedford, Ma. made this for the family get together at Christmas. We all looked forward to it so much..it was really a special part of the holiday for all of us. She gave me her recipe and I have made if for my family almost every Christmas. There were some years where here in NC I couldn't find the lady fingers but they are usually in the grocery stores at the holidays. Will send up a picture when I've made this years!
Ingredients You'll Need
2 dozen lady fingers (soft kind)
1/2 lb sweet chocolate (I use German Chocolate)
4 tbs. water
4 tbs sugar
4 egg yolks, beaten light
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
4 egg whites beaten light
1 cup cream or cool whip
Directions
Line a deep round cake pan with wax paper.
Line the bottom and sides with lady fingers.
Melt chocolate in the microwave or over a double boiler. Add the sugar, water and yolks and mix well. Cool.
Add the vanilla and fold in the egg whites.
Pour half of the chocolate mixture over the lady fingers. Add another layer of lady fingers and pour the remaining mixture over them.
Refrigerate over night.
Remove from the pan and peel off the wax paper. Fill center with Cool whip or whipped cream.
