Why I Love This Recipe
Did you know that onions have been cultivated for over 5,000 years and were even used as a currency in ancient Egypt? This humble vegetable was valued not just for its flavor, but also for its medicinal properties.
Ingredients You'll Need
1 large sweet onion, peeled
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, divided
2 teaspoons Old Bay seasoning
1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
Preheat the oven to 365°F (185°C).
Using a sharp paring knife, core the center of the sweet onion to create a hollow well, ensuring the bottom remains intact.
Stuff the cavity of the onion with 1 tablespoon of softened butter, filling it to the top. Place the onion on a large piece of heavy-duty foil.
In a small glass measuring cup, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave in 20-second intervals until completely melted.
Stir in the Old Bay seasoning, Cajun seasoning, dried parsley, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper into the melted butter.
Pour the seasoned butter into the hollow well in the center of the onion, allowing it to slightly overflow and pool at the bottom.
Wrap the onion tightly in the aluminum foil and place it in an 8x8-inch square baking dish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, until the onion is tender and infused with the aromatic seasoned butter.
Carefully open the foil and serve the onion on a plate with a rim to contain the flavorful butter.
Pairs Well With
This delightful dish pairs excellently with a bold red wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon or a refreshing non-alcoholic ginger lemon iced tea to complement the rich and spicy flavors.
