Why I Love This Recipe

The origin of the cheeseburger is disputed, but one claim is that it was created in 1926 by Lionel Sternberger at the age of 16, who decided to put a slice of American cheese on a sizzling hamburger at his father's Pasadena, California sandwich shop.

Ingredients You'll Need

1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend for best results)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
4 slices of cheddar cheese or American cheese
4 hamburger buns, toasted
8 slices of bacon, cooked until crispy (optional)
4 leaves of lettuce
4 slices of tomato
4 slices of red onion
Pickles, as desired
Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, as desired

Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions (about 2 ounces each) and gently shape them into thin patties, slightly larger than the bun size to account for shrinkage during cooking. Season both sides of each patty with salt and black pepper.

Preheat a grill or a skillet over medium-high heat. If using a skillet, you can add a little oil to prevent sticking. Cook the patties for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.

While the patties are cooking, toast the buns on the grill or in a toaster until they are golden brown.

Spread your desired condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise) on the bottom half of each bun. Place a leaf of lettuce on each bun, followed by a slice of tomato and a slice of red onion. Place one patty on top of the vegetables, followed by another patty. Add crispy bacon and pickles, if using. Top with the other half of the bun.
