Why I Love This Recipe

Soda bread is a traditional Irish bread that dates back to the 19th century. It became popular due to its simplicity and the limited ingredients required, making it a staple in Irish households.

RESULTS UPDATE: We have made this recipe twice and it is delicious. However, maybe because my Greek yogurt is thick, incorporating it into the flour took a little longer and it was difficult to form into a ball. What I did both times was to add some half and half or water to the dough to make it easier to form into a ball. But maybe if I used a thinner Greek yogurt it would have been easier. But I will say, it's delicious!

Ingredients You'll Need

3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/4 cups (300ml) Greek yogurt, divided
- a splash of almond milk, half & half or water (if too dry to handle and create ball)


Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda.

Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in 1 cup (240ml) of the Greek yogurt.

Using a fork, gradually incorporate the dry ingredients into the Greek yogurt, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. NOTE: I actually made a mistake and added the full amount of greek yogurt to the recipe at once. I think that's the best thing to do.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute, just until it comes together into a smooth ball.

Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet and use a sharp knife to score a deep 'X' on the top.

Brush the top of the loaf with the remaining 1/4 cup (60ml) of Greek yogurt. (SEE NOTE ABOVE - but I put a little half-and-half [it's all I had on hand] on the top just to give it some moisture.)

Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Allow the bread to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
