It all started when I received a variety spice pack, and there they were. Unlike the bulb, fennel fronds have a lighter, more delicate flavor, and they don't grow the bulb - just the fronds.

One stormy summer day, inspiration struck. I ventured into the garden, picked some fresh lavender and fennel, and decided to try my hand at making a jam. I paired it with a seeded baguette from our favorite Prescott bakery, Pangea. The result? My husband and I were literally fighting over the last bite!

This jam is a magical mix of sweet, savory, and a hint of spice, all generously slathered on fresh, warm bread. It’s a unique creation that brings a touch of our garden’s bounty to the table, and I hope you love it as much as we do. Happy cooking!

Ingredients You'll Need

For the Fruit & Fennel Jam:
- 1 cup of your favorite fruit, chopped (grapes, blueberries, or strawberries)
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon fresh lavender, chopped
- 2 tablespoons fresh fennel fronds, chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 1 tablespoon butter

For Serving:
- Fresh baked bread (we love French!)


Place the fresh bread in the oven to warm.

Combine all other ingredients in a saucepan and bring to a boil.

Simmer until the water evaporates and the sauce thickens.

Put the mixture in a serving bowl with a spoon.

Spoon (or dip) the mixture on your warmed bread.

Pairs Well With

A refreshing glass of iced mint tea (see recipe)
