Ingredients You'll Need

1/2 cup butter
3 ounces unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
2/3 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup nuts, chopped
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
1 3 ounce cream cheese, softened
4 tablespoons powdered sugar
(Instead of frosting, if you like)
12 vanilla caramels
1 tablespoon butter
4 teaspoons milk
2 3 ounce cream cheese, softened
1 egg


In a medium saucepan melt butter and unsweetened chocolate over low heat, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; cool. Meanwhile, grease an 8x8x2" or 9x9x2" baking pan, set aside. Stir sugar into chocolate mixture in saucepan. Add eggs, one at a time, beating by hand jut till combined. Stir in vanilla. In a small mixing bowl stir together the flour and baking soda. Add flour mixture to chocolate mixture, stir just till combined. Stir in nuts, if desired. Spread the batter tinto prepared pan. If Cream cheese swirl is desired, beat together cream cheese and egg. Spread 2/3 of the brownie batter in pan. Drizzle cream cheese mixture atop. Drop remaining brownie batter by spoonfuls on top of cream cheese batter. Using a knife, gently swirl to create a marbled effect. Bake in 350 degree oven allowing 40 minutes for 8" or 30 minutes for 9"pan. Frost when cool with Chocolate cream Cheese Frosting or Caramel Topping. FROSTING: In a small saucepan melt chocolate pieces over low heat, stirring constantly. Cool. In a small mixing bowl stir together the cream cheese and sugar. Stir in chocolate till smooth. Spread frosting over cooled brownies. Let frosting set. CARAMEL TOPPING: In a small saucepan combine caramels, butter and milk. Stir over medium-low heat till smooth. Cut unfrosted brownies into bars; drizzlze the warm caramel mixture over bars. Allow the caramel to set before serving.
