"Health(ier) Turkey McRib(ish)"

Serves 4 servings | Prep Time 15 PT15M | Cook Time 20 PT35M | Dinner

Why I Love This Recipe

The original McRib debuted in 1981 and was inspired by barbecue sandwiches popular in the Southern United States, but this healthier version brings the flavor without the guilt!

Ingredients You'll Need

1 lb ground turkey (lean, 93% or higher)
1/4 cup grated onion
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt (optional or reduce as desired)
1 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
For the BBQ Sauce:
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (natural sweetener choice)
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1 dash of liquid smoke (optional)
Assembly:
4 whole-grain sandwich rolls or lettuce leaves for a low-carb option
Thinly sliced onions
Pickles

Directions

In a large bowl, combine ground turkey, grated onion, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt until thoroughly mixed.

Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into an oval patty.

Heat the olive oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side until fully cooked and golden-brown. Internal temp should reach 165°F.

Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine BBQ sauce ingredients and heat over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally. Cook for 5-7 minutes to let the flavors meld. Adjust sweetener or vinegar to taste.

Once patties are cooked, coat them with the BBQ sauce and let them simmer for 1 minute in the remaining sauce for extra flavor.

Toast the buns or prepare the lettuce wraps. Assemble the sandwich with the sauced turkey patty, a few onion slices, and pickles.

Serve and enjoy!
