"Dense, chewy and amazing for soaking up soup and sauces"

Serves 8-10 | Prep Time 5 minutes | Cook Time 35-40 minutes

Why I Love This Recipe

Everyone bothering with sourdough for bread because there’s no yeast. It’s fine if you’re into it, but for everyone else it’s two weeks’ work for your first half decent loaf. What you want is soda bread. Five mins prep, and you can eat it within an hour of starting.

Ingredients You'll Need

284ml buttermilk (if you can't buy it you can make it with milk and lemons)
170g bread flour
170g wholemeal flour
salt to taste
1/2 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
Any seeds or herbs you have to hand and happen to like. (Pictured: poppy, sesame, chilli flakes)

Directions

Mix the dry ingredients, make a well and add the buttermilk

Mix, knead for 30 seconds, shape into a circle, cut a cross in it

Bake in a pre-heated oven set at 190C for 35 to 40 minutes until it sounds hollow.

Let it cool.
