Why I Love This Recipe

For many years, my idea of what Shepard's pie was is completely different than what it actually is. Back when I was in high school, my mother would make what she called Shepard's pie. What it consisted of was 2 uncooked pie crusts with browned ground beef cooked in a tomato based sauce, on top of that was creamy mashed potatoes and sprinkled on the top with some paprika and baked until golden brown. Sometimes my mother would add in some onions and green peppers, sometimes not, but overall, it was one of my favorite dishes.

When I got older and was married raising my children, I would make this very same dish, always thinking it was Shepard's pie until we were invited over a friend's house and was introduced to what Shepard's Pie truly is! It was then I realized that whatever my mother made was probably something she just whipped together at the last minute and called it Shepard's pie. It truly was a *duh!* moment for me.

It also got me thinking on how I can enhance this recipe and turn it around and make it something more. This is where I came up with Manwich pie. I'm sure I'm not the only person to have thought of this but I'd like to think my version is somewhat original, but if not, then I hope you enjoy it, nonetheless.

Ingredients You'll Need

2 unbaked pie shells (you can find them in the frozen section of your local grocery store)
2 pounds of ground beef
2 cans of manwich
7-9 baking potatoes
1/2-1 cup of milk
1/2 cup butter
2 small onions, chopped medium to fine
1 large green pepper, chopped medium fine
1 pound of fresh mozzarella (you can use store bought of course)


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Make sure you chop and prepare your onions and green pepper ahead of time to save time when preparing your meal.

Wash and peel your potatoes and set them on the stove in a deep pot filled with cold water and set to boil. Once boiled and soft and the water strained, add the milk and butter (salt and pepper if you like) and make your mashed potatoes.

Tip: If you have a particular way of making your mashed potatoes, such as a family recipe, or if you add sour cream, etc, then by all means do so, this is just a very basic way of cooking and preparing mashed potatoes.

Once you have the prep work and potatoes done set aside.

In a large deep skillet brown the ground beef. Season the beef with some salt and pepper. Drain

Once you have browned the meat, add in the manwich, the onions and the green peppers. Stir well.

Lower the heat and let simmer for about 20 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for about 15-20 minutes.

With a slotted spoon (I use this to allow any more oil or grease to drain away) spoon the ground beef into the uncooked pie crusts.

Layer the meat with slices of fresh mozzarella cheese. Top with the mashed potatoes (make sure to spread evenly and smoothly) and then sprinkle the top with some paprika.

Place in the oven and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes or until the pie crusts are a golden brown.
