"Mqaret = Dough + Dates"

Serves 36 | Prep Time 1 hour | Cook Time

Why I Love This Recipe

Back in the day, one could buy these tasty imqaret from Valletta, our capital city. Since it has been revamped, the kiosk is just gone and one cannot get these tasty pastries so easily!!

Ingredients You'll Need

400g plain flour
100g butter
the juice of an orange
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
400g pitted dates
120ml water
1tsp aniseed
1/4 of a tsp ground cloves
finely grated rind of one orange - ideally a Maltese orange :')
finely grated rind of one mandarine or lemon

Directions

DOUGH Instructions

Combine the 400g plain flour and 100g butter until you get a crumbly mixture.
Add some water and the orange juice to get the dough mixture right.
Put the dough in a plastic bag or use strech-and-seal to wrap it and store for at least 15 minutes in the fridge.

FILLING Instructions
In a small sauce pan put the 400g pitted dates and the 120ml water on low heat until the dates soften, stirring once in a while.
Remove from heat and add the 1tsp aniseed, the 1/4 of a tsp ground cloves and finally the rind. Combine everthing together and let cool.

Have a look at the picture to see the assembly! Bake for about 25-30 minutes (or until golden brown) on 190 degrees Celcius.

Pairs Well With

Vanilla Ice-cream
