Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

Why I Love This Recipe
You can also use your cookie cutters of any shape and size to cut out these classic cookies. Decorate with frosting, icing, chocolate chips, licorice whips, any edible candy can be used.
Ingredients You'll Need
2 C. all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. solid vegetable shortening
3/4 C. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. grated orange peel
3 Tbs. milk
Additional sugar
Directions
Preheat oven to 375F. Sift 2 C. flour, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp. baking soda and 1/4 tsp. salt into medium bowl. Using electric mixer, cream 1/2 C. shortening and 3/4 C. sugar in large bowl. Beat in 1 egg, 1 tsp. vanilla and 1 tsp. orange peel. Mix in dry ingredients alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Lightly grease 2 large cookie sheets. Roll dough out on lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut 3-inch-diameter rounds using cookie or biscuit cutter. Transfer dough rounds to prepared cookie sheets. Gather and re-roll scraps. Cut additional cookies. Sprinkle cookies with sugar. Bake cookies until golden brown on edges, about 14 minutes. Transfer to rack and cool completely.
