Its somewhat quick and easy, while being delicious.
Ingredients You'll Need
1 large onion, peeled and cut into 1-inch thick petals
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon chili powder or cayenne pepper (optional)
1 cup buttermilk (or milk if not available)
Oil for frying (about 2 cups for deep frying)
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Dipping Sauce: 1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar or honey
Directions
1. In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder (if used), salt, and black pepper.
2. In another mixing bowl, pour the buttermilk.
3. Dip each onion petal into the buttermilk, letting excess drip off, then coat in the seasoned flour.
4. Set the coated onion petals on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper while heating up the oil.
5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan or pot to approximately 350°F (175°C).
6. Fry the petals in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on paper towels.
7. For the Tangy Dipping Sauce, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, hot sauce, vinegar, and sugar in a small bowl and mix until smooth.
8. Serve the onion petals hot with the dipping sauce on the side.
