Poppy Seed Cake W/butter Cream Frosting

Why I Love This Recipe

This is one of our family favorites. My Mother made this on special occassions. It was a real treat to get poppy seed cake.

Prep: Soak 1 Cup of Poppy Seeds in 1 Cup of milk over night.

Ingredients You'll Need

1-1/2 cups sugar
1 cup crisco shortening
3 eggs
2 Cups sifted flour
2 tsp baking powder
pinch of salt
into Crisco Mixture
1 tsp Vanilla
Poppy Seed Mixture
For Frosting:
1 Egg White
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup scalded milk
1/2 Cup Butter
1/2 Cup Spry or Crisco
1 tsp vanilla


Mix the first 3 ingredients together well. Sift in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add in vanilla and the poppy seed mixture.

Bake in an 8" round pan at 350F for 25-30 min or until toothpick comes out clean.

For Frosting: Beat Egg Whites until stiff.

Add Sugar Slowly 1 tsp at a time, Add Milk Slowly

Chill in refrigerator for a few hours.

Beat shortening. Gradually add to other mixture 1 tsp at a time. Add Vanilla Frost Cake and Serve.
