Poppy Seed Coffee Cake

Why I Love This Recipe
This recipe was given to us by one of our friends when we lived in Michigan more than thirty years ago.
Ingredients You'll Need
4 ounces poppy seeds
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups butter
3 cups light brown sugar
8 egg yolks
5 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
4 teaspoons baking powder
8 egg whites
2 teaspoons almond extract
1 cup light brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
Directions
Soak poppy seeds in buttermilk for two hours.
Cream butter and sugar until fluffy; add egg yolks and beat well.
Sift together flour, soda, salt and baking powder.
Add this mixture to the poppy seed mixture; add almond extract.
Gently fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
Pour half of batter in 12 x 19 inch baking pan.
Mix 1 cup light brown sugar with cinnamon, sprinkle half of this mixture over half of batter in pan.
Add remaining batter, than sprinkle the remaining sugar & cinnamon mixture.
Bake at 350ºF for one hour.
