Ingredients You'll Need

3 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups white sugar
3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 1/4 tsp salt
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/2 cup sour cream
2 Tbsp red food coloring
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
1 1/2 tsp white vinegar


Directions

STEP 1 Gather all ingredients. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter and flour two 9x2-inch round cake pans. STEP 2 Sift 3 cups flour, 2 cups sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt together in a bowl; set aside. STEP 3 Whisk eggs in a large bowl until smooth. Add oil, buttermilk, sour cream, food coloring, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, and vinegar; whisk until combined.STEP 4 Add flour mixture in 3 batches; mix by hand as little as possible so as not to over beat. If using an electric mixer, add flour mixture and mix until just incorporated. Divide batter evenly between the prepared pans. STEP 5 Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 35 to 40 minutes. STEP 6 Cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans to cool completely on a wire rack, 20 to 30 minutes more.
