Sweet and Sour Chicken with Sauce

Why I Love This Recipe

This was a recipe that we found and decided to try, you can actually find the original recipe here:

Sweet and sour chicken has always had a very personal place in my heart. I've always loved dipping my chicken in the sauce, and it was always the first food I went to when my parents took us out to eat at a Chinese restaurant. Enough so that it was one of the first things that I wanted to learn how to do when I decided to really start cooking Chinese Food.

This sauce is to DIE for, I am more than happy to say that it tastes better than the sweet and sour sauce you get at the restaurant. I'm honestly thinking about trying to jar some to take out as a dip at random times.

Ingredients You'll Need

1/2 cup ketchup
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1/3 cup white vinegar
1/2 cup brown sugar(reduce for a less sweeter taste)
3/4 cup cold water (or a can of unsweetened pineapple juice)
3 tablespoons cornstarch (for a thinner sauce reduce to 2 tablespoons, if you want an very thick sauce use 4 tablespoons)

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup cornstarch
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1 1/3 cups cold water
1 -2 teaspoon sesame oil (optional)
oil for frying
8 chicken breasts sliced into bite-size pieces
seasoning salt to taste.


To make the sweet and sour sauce sauce:

Combine the first 5 ingredients until in a saucepan.

In a cup or bowl whisk the cold water or pineapple juice with cornstarch until well blended.

Whisk into the ketchup mixture.

Stir or whisk constantly over medium-high heat until bubbly.
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer and mix until thickened. Remove from heat.

Allow to sit at room temperature while making the chicken balls.

To make the chicken balls:

In a large bowl combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder. Then add in water and sesame oil,whisk until smooth. Add in chicken pieces using clean hand sand mix until well coated. Preheat oil in a deep-fryer or Dutch oven to 375 degrees. Dip the battered chicken pieces carefully in hot oil and fry until golden brown.

Remove to a paper towel. Immediately sprinkle with salt after frying if desired. Serve immediately with sweet and sour sauce.
