Why I Love This Recipe

A man can work a whole life in the same square mile and never reach the end of it. Robert worked the rails as they pushed West, watched the land fold and breathe, carried losses that had no names yet. This is the drink at the end of the line — rye and something old and herbed, warm against the mountain cold, quiet as a man who's learned what to hold and what to let go.

Ingredients You'll Need

2 oz American rye whiskey
1/2 oz Bénédictine
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Orange peel

Directions

Combine the American rye whiskey, Bénédictine, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass.

Stir gently to combine and slightly chill.

Strain into a clean, old-fashioned glass or other serving glass.

Express the oil from a strip of orange peel over the drink and drop the peel in.

Serve neat, sip slowly, and enjoy.

Pairs Well With

Pecan pralines for a sweet contrast; chilled soda water for a hydrating non-alcoholic option
