Ingredients You'll Need
Apple Filling
• 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix)
• ½ cup brown sugar (packed)
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional)
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 tbsp cornstarch (helps thicken juices)
Crisp Topping
• ½ cup rolled oats
• ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
• ⅓ cup brown sugar
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• ¼ tsp salt
• ⅓ cup cold butter, cubed
Directions
1. Prepare the oven & dish
• Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
• Lightly butter an 8x8-inch baking dish or similar size.
2. Prepare the apples
• Peel, core, and slice apples about ¼-inch thick.
• Place in a large bowl.
• Add brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), lemon juice, vanilla, and cornstarch.
• Toss well until apples are evenly coated.
3. Assemble the filling
• Spread apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
• Press lightly so the apples are packed but not crushed.
4. Make the crisp topping
• In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
• Add cold butter cubes.
• Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to rub butter into dry ingredients until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
5. Add topping
• Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples.
• Don’t press down—this keeps it crisp.
6. Bake
• Place dish on the middle rack.
• Bake 40–45 minutes, until:
o Top is golden brown
o Apple filling is bubbling around edges
7. Rest & serve
• Let cool 10 minutes before serving.
• Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
