Butter Cake with Browned Butter Frosting
  • CAKE:
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup half and half
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. In large mixer bowl combine sugar and 3/4 cup butter. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl ofte, until creamy. Add egg yolks and vanilla. Continue beating, scraping bowl often, until well mixed (1 minutes). Reduce speed to low. Beat, gradually adding flour, baking powder and salt alternately with half and half and scraping bowl often, until well mixed (1-2 minutes) (Batter will be thick) Divide batter between 2 greased and floured 8" round cake pans. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 5 mintues, remove from pans. Cool completely. Meanwhile, in 1 quart saucepan melt butter over medium low heat until lightly browned (4-5 minutes). In small mixer bowl combine all frosting ingredients except milk. Beat at medium speed, scaping bowl often and gradually adding enough milk for desired spreading consisitency. Spread frosting between cooled cake layers; frost entire cake.
