Cheeseburger Buns

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 packages (1/4 oz each) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 C warm water (110 to 115degrees)
  • 3/4 C warm milk (110 to 115 degrees)
  • 1/4 C sugar
  • 1/4 C shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1ts salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 C all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/4 Chopped onion
  • 1 can (8oz) tomato sauce
  • 8 slices american cheese,quartered.
DIRECTIONS
  1. In a mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. add milk, sugar, shortening & egg, salt & 2 C flour; beat until smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth & elastic, about 4-6 minutes. Placein a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 min.
  2. In a skillet, cook beef & onion until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in tomato sauce. Remove from heat; set aside. Punch dough down; divide into 16 pieces. On a lightly floured surface gently roll out & stretch each piece into a 5" circle. Top each circle with 2 pieces cheese & about 3 TB beef mixture. Bring dough over filling to center; pinch edges to seal. Place seam side down on a greased baking sheet. Cover & let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 20 min.
  3. Bake at 400 F for 8-12 min, or until golden brown. Serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers. Yiels: 16 sandwiches
RECIPE BACKSTORY
This recipe came from the June/july 2003 Taste of Home I have never made it but always thought it sounded good. I don't do much yeast cooking so I may opt out & do biscuits instead, but they look really good.
