Christmas sauerkraut soup
CATEGORIES
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 package of sauerkraut (not the one in can)
  • Cubed smoked ham
  • Smoked pork or turkey kielbasa
  • Spicy sausage - pork or turkey
  • Garlic
  • Dry or fresh mushrooms
  • Whole black pepper
  • Salt, paprika
  • Bay leaves
  • 1/2 cup of barley
  • Sour cream if desired
DIRECTIONS
  1. Rinse the sauerkraut in cold water, if you want the soup to be less sour
  2. Add to soup pot
  3. Add water
  4. Add ham cubes
  5. Add kielbasa cut into bite pieces
  6. Cut the sausage to about 1 inch size and add to soup
  7. Add dry or fresh mushrooms
  8. Add garlic
  9. Whole pepper, salt, paprika
  10. Add couple bay leaves
  11. Bring to boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 45-50 minutes Add 1/2 cup of barley and cook 10 more minutes
  12. Serve with crusty bread.
