Laura Ingalls Wilder's Gingerbread

- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 2 Tsp baking soda
- 1 cup boiling water
- 3 cups flour
- 1 tsp each cinnamon, ginger, all-spice, nutmeg and ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 well beaten eggs
DIRECTIONS
- Beat brown sugar and shortening until well blended.
- Mix the molasses and baking soda in the cup of boiling water. Add to the sugar mixture, blending well.
- Mix the flour and spices and salt together and add to the liquid mixture. mixing well.
- Lastly add the eggs and mix well. Batter will be thin.
- Put in a 9 inch baking pan.
- Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.
- Raisins or candied fruit may be added.
