Masoor Dal (Spicy red lentils)
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup split red lentils
  • ¾ cup finely chopped onions
  • 3 cups water
  • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon ground coriander
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 3 garlic cloves, halved
  • 1 fresh hot green chili, seeded
  • One 2-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled & coarsely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or unsalted butter
  • One 16-ounce can whole tomatoes, chopped, with juice
  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh coriander, for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro, for garnish
  • 2 medium tomatoes, thinly sliced, for garnish
