Mike Mazur's Balish
INGREDIENTS
  • 1/4 Lb oleo (yuck! how bout crisco)
  • 1/4 butter
  • 1/2 LB philadelphia cream cheese
  • 2 Cups sifted flour
  • Add filling none noted on recipe but I've used the following:
  • Walnut filling
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 TBS butter
  • 2/3 cups sugar
  • 1 LB walnuts crushed
  • 1 TBS vanilla
  • Fresh fruit:
  • 3 Cups fresh fruit
  • 3 TBS sugar
  • 1 TBS water
  • 2 tsp Cornstarch
  • Cream cheese:
  • 6oz cream cheese
  • 1/4 tsp lemon juice
  • 3 TBS sugar
  • 1 egg yolk
  • or Jam or preserves
  • or pie filling
  • Powder sugar for dusting
DIRECTIONS
  1. cream "oleo" and cheese together
  2. Add flour a little at a time
  3. Roll dough in tube cover in plastic wrap and fridge overnight
  4. Next day:
  5. roll about 1/8th " thick
  6. cut in 2"by 2" squares
  7. Add filling
  8. Walnut filling:
  9. Heat milk, butter, sugar and vanilla together
  10. Remove from heat stir in 1 LB walnuts crushed
  11. Fresh fruit:
  12. Heat all ingredients until thickened some
  13. Cream cheese filling:
  14. Stir all together until smooth
  15. or Jam or preserves for filling
  16. or pie filling
  17. pinch opposite corners together or roll up like cigar and put on greased tin
  18. Bake at 375F until lightly browned
  19. Dust w/ powdered sugar
