Speculaas (Dutch Santa Claus Cookies)

- 2 cups dark brown sugar
- 6 Tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2½ cups butter
- 3 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1 cup slivered almonds
- 6 cups all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 teaspoons ground cloves
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
DIRECTIONS
- In bowl combine milk and sugar, stir until smooth.
- In a large bowl sift the dry ingredients and blend in the butter until the mixture has the consistency of cornmeal.
- Add the milk and sugar mixture and almonds, mix well.
- Wrap in foil or wax paper and refrigerate overnight.
- Roll out dough and use Christmas cookie cutters being sure to dust well with flour so dough will not stick.
- Place on greased cookie sheets, bake at 350ºF for 8 minutes or until lightly browned.
