Texas Sheet Cake

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter (or margarine)
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 T cocoa
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Icing:
  • 1 stick butter or margarine
  • 4 T cocoa
  • 6 T milk
  • 1 lb powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup nuts (optional)
DIRECTIONS
  1. Sift together sugar and flour. Boil in a saucepan the shortening, butter, water, and cocoa. Pour over the flour and sugar mixture. Mix while still hot. Add buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. Bake on a greased and floured 15x10x1" cookie sheet at 400° for 20 minutes.
  2. For the icing: Bring to a boil the butter, cocoa and milk. Add the sugar and vanilla (and nuts) and mix well. Pour over the cake while still hot. Sprinkle a few nuts on top.
